My new raspberry plants.

We are now of year 3 of having a garden here. I have been wanting raspberries ever since we moved in. My hubby loves raspberry jam, it is favorite and barley eats any other kind. I haven't been able to source any out and I have been to cheap to buy them from a store, since they do pretty much grow like weeds here.

Then we finally got a call! A friend called us saying he was working on a lot which was being over run my raspberries and we could come take what we want. So we met him there that day and started digging. We managed to get 17 shoots that day. I was so excited I stayed up late doing a bit of research on them. After a bit of research I had my plan. The next afternoon I got digging.

Unfortunately, where I wanted to plant the raspberries was where my rhubarb plants were planted. So I moved those between my potato tire towers. Those took a ton of work. I forgot how huge and strong the root systems are on these plants. I had a few extra babies which I am planting in pots. I kept 6 total, 3 plants on each side on my potato but right by my apples trees. When I was doing my research I came across a few posts about rhubarb. They said when you plant rhubarb by trees the root systems help each other. I know rhubarb is pretty much indestructible, so it was worth a try. Plus it turned out looking pretty nice.

Little friend I found while finishing my rhubarb.

So once that was done I got to digging my spot for my raspberry plants. I wanted a nice big spot, so I can let them grow and I wanted enough room to put in another row. So I put them between my strawberry bed and a cherry tree. Its a big spot and I had enough room for 2 rows, possibly more in the future but to for sure. I wanted to put one row along the fence, so I can use the fence as a trellis.

I turned up the grass, weeded and gave it a good rack over. I planted my 17 plants, spaced nicely apart to leave lots of room. Added a nice layer of compost, vegetable water, a layer of black top soil on top of that, then I finished it off with some wood chips.

I thought I was finished when I got a text from a friend who saw my picture of the raspberries on Instagram and wanted to know where I got them. I told her where and we made a plan to go down and I decided to get more. We go down to the lot after we got the permission and I grabbed another 20 plants (some for my sister in law.) I cleared a second row for the new bunch. I still want to make some sort of trellis for this row still but its been pretty wet since, so I am just waiting to get out again.

I am just so happy to have a huge lot of big gorgeous raspberry plants. I can't wait for the canning to come!
